Music

Mr. Colin Gort

Hello Taft Families!

My name is Colin Gort and I am the Music Teacher here at Taft school district 90. I teach General Music throughout the school day to students from 1st to 8th grade. I come from the University of Illinois in Urbana/Champaign where I received my Bachelors in Music Education. I love to sing, dance, play instruments, and play games. Students in my class get to explore the world of music with access to activities and instruments from a variety of different styles and areas of the world. Last year we introduced Bucket Drumming into the mix! This year each grade level will focus on furthering their understanding of music and how we interpret it.

In addition to being the General Music teacher, I am also the Choir director here at Taft. Students in 5th grade or beyond have the opportunity to join Choir to express themselves through the art of song. We sing selections from many different time periods, genres, and cultures each year. Last year we expanded our reach to singing at the Chicago Wolves hockey game and Caroling in downtown Lockport. This year I hope to do even more!

I also teach the Taft Beginning and Concert Bands that are each groups that perform locally often, including the White Oak Library which has hosted us for events and the Joliet Slammers at the first ever Summer Band. This year our Concert Band will be the largest it has been since I have been here at Taft. Let’s make some fantastic music with that large ensemble sound!

I would like to thank Taft Foundation for all of their efforts and support throughout Taft’s history to keep us from losing our extra-curriculars. Without such dedicated individuals these great things for our students would not be possible. Thank you.

So let’s have a fantastic school year!

Sincerely,

Mr. Gort
