Viking Families,

It is with great pleasure that I write this letter to introduce myself as the new superintendent serving Taft School District 90.  I first moved to Lockport for my senior year at Lockport Township High School.  My wife, who is a Taft graduate, and I bought our first home within the Taft school boundaries when we began our teaching careers in 2000, and I am proud to say that our son graduated from Taft this past May and my daughter will be beginning her sixth-grade year next week.

Previously, I spent my entire educational career teaching in Lyons and then working as an administrator in Berwyn.  I grew up in the Cicero/Berwyn area so serving the communities that helped raise me was extremely special for me.  I truly believe that our schools belong to the communities so having an opportunity to come and serve the community where I live is humbling to say that least.

When I interviewed with our Board of Education in September 2018 and was ultimately selected for this position, I presented our board members with an entry plan of how I wanted to go about learning about the district.  Even though I have been fortunate enough to have had my children attend Taft there is still so much I need to learn, and I truly feel that our parents and guardians can help provide me with a tremendous amount of perspective from their experiences at Taft with their own children.  To that end, I would love to meet with every one of our parents, guardians, and community members to discuss all things Taft.  While I plan to host some meet and greet type events over the course of the next several months I would also love to schedule individual times for parents and community members to meet with me.   Please be on the lookout for invitations to the meet and greet events or call the school and speak with Melissa Lesniak to schedule a meeting with me.

In October I plan to present our Board of Education with a report based on everything I learned as outlined in my entry plan.  I also plan to make the report public and share it with our parents, community, and staff with the idea that we can then begin engaging all of those groups in a process to develop some long-range goals to help guide our district.  If you would like to view the entry plan please click here visit

Parent and community feedback are critically important for me, so please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, positive feedback, or concerns.

With Viking Pride,

Jim Calabrese
